Lawrence Alma-Tadema's "Exhausted Maenides" (Study?)

Studies and half-finished pieces are excellent for determining the methods of the artist. In this painting although Alma-Tadema is undoubtedly a very realistic, "tight" artist you can see that his method begins with a very loosely painted image. Even he begins a painting by blocking in the major tonalities.
