James Abbot McNeill Whistler's "Harmony in Pink and Grey (Portrait of Lady Meux)"

Seven works of art I would like to see at the Frick

I recently visited New York and seeing the Frick was part of my plans, but due to time constraints I couldn't do it.  Anyway, in an effort to turn lemons into lemonade, I'm going to post seven works of art from the Frick that I wish I could have seen.

I just discovered this artist's work and I think it's really nice.  I'm re-posting yesterday's painting by Davis here as well.  I suspect these works depict the same model.

Nationality: Hungarian
Born-Died: 1869-1937
Creation Date: 1912

I only just discovered this painter (how could that be?) and I love his work.  I also learned that this woman was painted by Sargent and many, many other artists that I admire.  This woman's raised hand knocks me out!

Frederick Ruckstull's "Evening"

Nationality: American
Born/Died: 1853–1942
Creation Date: 1891
Size: 62.5 x 18.5 x 21.25 in. (158.8 x 47 x 54 cm)
Media: Marble
Location: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City, New York, USA

This is a great sculpture but I not approve of the title, nor do I approve of the tradition of representing a beautiful human being and then ascribing to it an unrelated title as shortcut to conveying profound concepts. Ironically, the work usually embodies a more profound concept by itself--a view of man--without the help of a title. "Evening" is a small, concrete topic which is meaningless in itself.

Photos by me.

Creation Date: 1818
Size: 20 x 15 3/4 in. (40 x 50.5 cm)
Media: Oil on wood
Location: National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, USA

This is a painting that was in my computer folder called "Unknown American Paintings" for years until just yesterday when I finally found the information about it. When you search for this image online there is a great deal of color difference between the various photographs of this painting, unfortunately, and the picture from the National Gallery isn't too good either. The image here seems to have been photoshopped somewhat. The detail photographs however were taken by me.

Atlas Week: John Singer Sargent's "Atlas"

On this Day in the History of Art: Leonardo da Vinci born (1452), Domenichino died (1641), Charles Wilson Peale born (1741), Ayn Rand and Frank O’Connor marry (1929), Atlas Shrugged movie released (2011)

Because the Atlas Shrugged movie is coming out today I thought it would be fun to post a week of images of Atlas by various artists from history starting with my favorite artist, John Singer Sargent.

Nationality: American
Born/Died: 1856-1925

Creation Date: 1922-1925
Size: 10 ft. diameter (307.3 cm)
Media: oil on canvas
Location: Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts, USA

This is one of my favorite depictions of Atlas and when considering the "Atlases" of Atlas Shrugged, it's fitting that he is surrounded by sleeping people. I also like how the circular format fits the design of the Atlas' sphere because in some depictions of Atlas the strong curve of the sphere is disjunctive with the rest of the composition. Unlike the Atlas of Atlas Shrugged, this Atlas is holding up "the heavens" instead of the Earth.
