This beautiful little painting is from a wonderful book called Lacquer Miniatures Fedoskino: Masterpieces of Russian Folk Artwhich was given to me as a Christmas gift by my sister-in-law . While many of the works in that book can accurately be called "folk art" there are many others (such as this one) that do not bear any resemblance to that category of art.
Throughout history Christan mythology has been depicted with great variety. Because images of Jesus are so common in the history of art, I thought it would be interesting to explore some of the more unusual works.
Today's post is another painting by Russian-born, Australian artist, George Washington Lambert. I am currently enamored with his lush, painterly style and color. I am also enjoying his interesting compositional devices (note the tree trunk in this painting and the contrasting tones with unified shapes in yesterday's post). I am very glad I recently discovered this wonderful artist and I hope to see more of his work in the future.
